BrightStar Credit Union Board Chairperson Dr. Dorothy Jackson Orr Receives 2006 Sojourner Truth Award

Sunrise, FL – July 10, 2006 – Dr. Dorothy Jackson Orr, Board Chairperson for BrightStar Credit Union, one of the largest credit unions in south Florida with 37,000 members, was presented with the 2006 Sojourner Truth Award by the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. (NANBPWC) Each year, the Sojourner Truth award, the organization’s highest honor, is given to a woman who has exemplified outstanding community service and whose life parallels the life and qualities of Sojourner Truth, the organization’s matriarch and a leading advocate for women’s rights, abolition and prison reform.

“I am honored to receive this award,” said Dr. Orr. “I believe that education is the parent of all vocations and I strive daily to show respect for all people and appreciation for their dignity and worth.” Dr. Orr was an educator for four decades and retired from the School Board of Broward County in 2001.  As an active community leader, Dr. Orr chairs the Board of Directors of Brightstar Credit Union as well as the Code Enforcement Board of the City of Oakland Park, FL.  She is also affiliated with a number of religious, community, social, civic, professional and Greek-letter organizations, boards, associations and task forces.

A resident of Oakland Park, Dr. Orr holds a Master of Arts from the University of Michigan and a Doctorate of Education from Nova Southeastern University.
