What do I need to open a membership account?

You’ll need a valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or state ID), your Social Security number, proof of eligibility (such as a pay stub, utility bill, or school ID showing your qualifying address), and a minimum $1 deposit to open your savings account — this money is yours and stays in your account.

Is there a fee to join?

Nope — no fees to join. Just open your membership with a $1 deposit into your savings account, and you’re all set.

Can I open an account online?

Yes! You can apply for membership online in just a few minutes. Click the "Get Started" button on this page and follow the steps. You can also visit any BrightStar branch to open your account in person.

What types of accounts can I open?

BrightStar offers personal accounts (savings, checking, money market, CDs, IRAs), business accounts (business checking, business money market), and specialized accounts for minors and educators.

Can I open an account for my child?

Yes. We offer minor savings accounts for children under 18. A parent or guardian must be a BrightStar member and will be listed as a joint owner on the account. Children 10 and older can also get a checking account.

Can I open a business account?

Yes. BrightStar offers Premier Business Checking, Classic Business Checking, and Non-Profit Organization checking accounts. You'll need your business formation documents, a valid ID, and your EIN. Click "Business" in the membership wizard to get started.

What's the difference between a credit union and a bank?

Credit unions are member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperatives. This means profits go back to members through better rates, lower fees, and improved services — not to shareholders. BrightStar is federally insured by NCUA, just like banks are insured by FDIC.

Are my deposits insured?

Yes. All deposits at BrightStar Credit Union are federally insured up to $250,000 per depositor by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).

Can my family members join too?

Yes! Immediate family members of existing BrightStar members are eligible to join. This includes your spouse, parents, children, siblings, grandparents, and grandchildren.
