5 Ways to Shop Safely Online
Online shopping has become a part of daily life, but cybercriminals are constantly finding new ways to steal your information. These five practices will help you shop safely.
1. Shop on Secure Websites
Always look for "https://" in the URL and a padlock icon in your browser's address bar before entering any payment information. Avoid clicking links in emails or ads—type the store's web address directly into your browser instead.
2. Use Credit Cards, Not Debit Cards
Credit cards offer stronger fraud protection than debit cards. If your credit card number is compromised, you can dispute the charge and aren't out any cash while it's being investigated. With a debit card, the money leaves your account immediately.
3. Enable Two-Factor Authentication
Whenever a retailer offers two-factor authentication (2FA), turn it on. This adds a second verification step—usually a code sent to your phone—making it much harder for someone to access your account even if they have your password.
4. Be Cautious With Deals That Seem Too Good
If a deal looks unbelievably cheap, it probably is. Scam websites often lure shoppers with impossibly low prices. Research unfamiliar retailers before buying—check reviews on independent sites, look for a physical address and phone number, and search for complaints.
5. Monitor Your Accounts Regularly
Check your credit card and bank statements weekly. The sooner you spot an unauthorized charge, the easier it is to resolve. Set up transaction alerts through your credit union's mobile app so you're notified of every purchase in real time.
Bonus: Use Virtual Card Numbers
Some credit card issuers now offer virtual card numbers—temporary numbers linked to your real account. Use a different virtual number for each online purchase so your real card number is never exposed.
BrightStar Credit Union's mobile app lets you set up instant transaction alerts and lock your debit card with a single tap if you suspect fraud. Your security is our priority.
